Dooley, a fictional Irish barkeep in Chicago.
Reading through a book of the Mr.Dooley pieces, I found at the end of it some written by Dunne in his own voice. I came across a recent piece discussing evidence about beliefs on climate issues. It finds that Democrats mostly believe temperatures are warming due to human action and something must be done about it, Republicans mostly don't, but that the difference is not due to differing perceptions about what climate scientists believe. If the question is not what is true but what most climate scientists believe, Republicans and Democrats give roughly similar answers—correct in some cases, incorrect in others. It struck me that his description fits my observations of the online debate. Most participants appear confident that their side is right, the other side stupid or evil. Substantive arguments occasionally appear, but they are largely cut and paste from popular web sites on the side of whoever is posting them. I should add that I do not think it is clear what climate scientists believe. There is, however, one problem. The camera is set up with a field of view that is virtually the entire width of the wall I am standing in front of. The result is to make the image of my face too small to readily read my expression, which largely eliminates the advantage of having video as well as audio recording. The resulting recordings do not look nearly as good as the recordings of public lectures of mine that have been made on various occasions and webbed. The simple solution, which I hope to persuade the people in charge of the system to adopt next time I use it, would be to narrow the field of view down so it only covered the central location where I am normally standing. One disadvantage of that as a general solution to the problem is that professors sometimes move around to make use of the whiteboard, which also runs the full width of the wall, or for other reasons. I have been reading up on the Amish for one chapter of the book on legal systems very different from ours that I'm currently working on. They provide an example of what I think of as an embedded legal system—a group that is under the authority of an external legal system, but also has its own legal system which it succeeds in enforcing on its members.
It occurred to me that one could view the Amish as a working example of a form of anarchy. It is a very strange form, since the rules that the Amish are under are considerably more constraining—including rules on what styles of clothing they can wear, rules against owning automobiles or flying on airplanes, and much else—than the rules the rest of us are under.
To expand on that, for readers not familiar with the Amish.Over the years, I've taught a few people to shoot. While I've shot untold thousands of rounds of pistol and rifle fire over the years, and snapped at least as many more dryfire practice shots, I don't take it upon myself to teach a lot of people to shoot. Why? Because, frankly, it's a lot of trouble to do right, and I'll be damned if I'll do it wrong. I finally settled on teaching the most basics:Safety Sight Picture Safety Trigger Control SafetyIf I had a dollar for every time that I've quick-sketched something like this during my safety lecture. My elder daughter looked out the window at the early spring sun shining on the remnants of snow in the corners of the yard yesterday afternoon, and said, "You need to take me shooting. "Damn. She's right. I had no excuse. Time to take the kid shooting. St. Lets you raise & lower plants with a simple touch. Good Morning! It's challenge day at Some Odd Girl. S. corporations are sitting on a lot of cash, but not spending it. I don’t find that particularly puzzling: with huge excess capacity, why invest in building even more capacity. But almost everyone seems to agree that if we could somehow get businesses to spend some of that cash, it would create jobs. Which then raises the question: how can you believe that, and not also believe that if the U. S. I have never seen a coherent objection to this line of argument. Let me take a crack at this. Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Here’s how it works. My mind, unbidden, invents a number of possible futures. I figure out how to respond to each one: “If this happens, then …. It's all very well knowing that God is in control when you're going through a hard time. But at the same time, it's scary, because he's in control and we're not. Tim Keller captures this tension perfectly as he reflects on the disciples' reaction to Jesus calming the storm: Why were they more terrified in the calm than they were in the storm? Because Jesus was as unmanageable as the storm itself. The storm had immense power - they couldn't control it. Jesus had infinitely more power, so they had even less control over him. But there's a huge difference. A storm doesn't love you. Well, Deb - and anyone else who's interested in offering hospitality to people from other cultures - you'll love these posts! I looked up, and there it was: a small green bird, flitting from branch to branch. A bellbird!I grew up with bellbirds in our backyard. There's no more beautiful or evocative Australian bird song that I know of, apart from the carolling of the magpies in the early morning. Like the single metallic chime of a high-pitched bell, but far more piercing and beautiful, the bellbirds' "tink!" rings through the bush. You don't often see them, but you can't help but hear them. I heard another bellbird as I woke up the other morning, chiming from the lemon-scented gums behind our bedroom. And another "tink!" just interrupted my thoughts as I wrote this post. Yes! There's another! And another, and another! Somewhere in the trees near our house there's a bellbird, dancing from tree to tree, piping his little song.
And he said, I will not do it for forty’s sake.Jesus states that His disciples know where He is going and they know Him, which is the way to get to that place where He is going. Thomas, who is called ‘Doubting Thomas’ in popular sayings, did not get it, as the disciples often did not get what Jesus was telling them. Jesus then makes one of the most, if not the most, profound and important statements in the Bible that should upset all of the universalists out there who insist we are all God’s children and that everyone is on their own path to some kind of Heaven of their own imagination. He states very clearly that there is only one way to God, and that is through Him. The physical body is your vessel that carries you around in the world. It’s how you identify with the physical world: your physical reality identity. Your soul is your self identity. It allows you to be distinct as “I” from others.

Good works will not save you. However, bad works do result in a negative judgment: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. You may know most of the scripture I am going to quote you. I trust that they will hit you differently from something you know in your head. As you look at each verse ask yourself the question, “Is this verse true or false?” Make yourself answer the question. If you answer “True”, thank God from your heart for this true statement and then thank God all day long for this truth. The result will be that this truth will end up in your heart. It will not be just information in your head. My first verse is a rhetorical question. “How can we who died to sin still live in it?” He is not wanting to know how to sin. I did my first bit of harder running on Friday with a tempo - the tempo was pretty slow, which is partially because I'm really trying to keep my workouts controlled, and partially because I'm out of shape, both mentally and physically. What was interesting is how much that cadence can change based on circumstances. Below, the first picture is my cadence for an easy run on a fairly hilly route where I was also dodging puddles and pedestrians, stopping at lights, etc. "My first thought was "where did all the missed calls go to?". My second thought was "who is eating all the biscuits?". No, it's not the fact that there has been a lack of biscuits which is very unusual. Anyway, on the floor that I am located I have noticed that there is an empty desk that just has a phone on it. Now that is not unusual in itself, you might say, and normally I would agree. Accustomed to the traditional etched casing, with one, two or three stage gear wheels, these enclosed units seemingly took loco building into the realms of clock-making excellence. Maybe it was due to unfamiliarity, but they've been sitting patiently in a box awaiting gainful employment ever since. Available from Mainly Trains, the upgrade kit consists of frames, coupling rods, brake gear and an array of detail parts for the plastic bodyshell. Under initial testing, the chassis has been moving very smoothly and efficiently, although the gears do need a bit more time to bed in, being a little tight to begin with. I've just stripped the frames down again so that they can be primed and painted, leaving final testing and the fitting of the brake gear until later. Disclaimer: No math here. Sorry. Falmouth is full of boats, none of which look in the least like Erin Mae.Very nice. He was as keen to show us around as we were to look, so we enjoyed a good inspection. Given that it's December, and considering the weather conditions at Erin Mae's marina, we're doing very well. We even sat out on the balcony in the sun for a short while this morning after inspecting Snow Goose. But the ones we met today on the approach to Penkridge took the prize for being the grumpiest ever! Could have been the weather – it was cold with some damp in the air. But anglers are supposed to enjoy that sort of thing, or at least to turn up their noses at the thought that such conditions could depress them. I think among the first twenty there was just one that actually met our eyes in a greeting as we approached. Perhaps another two muttered sort sort of unintelligible response to our cheerful "Good morning". The rest looked the other way, messed around with their bait, fiddled with a line – anything except acknowledge a couple of passing boaters. Ah well – takes all sorts. .
